I love to move. I get a kick out of being in my body, sensing its vitality, power and grace.
Many of my happiest memories involve the thrill of physicality: swimming, biking, tennis, kiss-chase, long-jump, ping-pong, tai-chi, yoga, running, hiking, weight-training, judo, skiing and skating. Recalling each activity, my body responds with a smile and a tingle.
But it’s dancing that gives me my highest high. From ring-around-a-rosy, to under-age disco-dancing, sensual salsa and adult ballet, when music and movement combine, my spirit soars. I was creating my own organic ecstasy on the dance floor long before “E”.
It never occurred to me to pursue this passion as anything other than a hobby, though, until I took my first Nia class in 2001 and was instantly love-struck. It was my ultimate dream workout. I left glowing with inner peace – and outer perspiration. My gut said: “I want to teach this!”
Not what I expected as a pregnant 30-something graduate student.
But now here I am: a Nia instructor and in my element!
When I talk about Nia, it’s often with love. I love sharing the joy of movement with all ages and abilities. I love searching out new music for class. I love producing workshops to explore Nia principles in greater depth. I love watching my students bloom.
With Nia I get to be and become my best self. I bring my uniqueness to class: an open heart, high energy, creativity and playfulness.
The more I practice Nia, the more I am awed by its richness and depth. Through Nia, I am learning and changing in body, mind, emotions and spirit. Through Nia I am part of a loving community that spans the globe. This is soul food.
As a child I dreamed of being a dancer. And now it makes perfect sense to me to say: “As we move toward our dreams, we move toward our divinity”.
